ROMON MONAKA

Monaka is a very traditional confectionery with a long history. It is said that the noblemen of Heian period (794-1185) thought this confectionery resembles an autumn full moon and called it “the moon of Monaka (or an autumn full moon)”, which is where its name comes from.
“ROMON MONAKA” was designed in 1915 by Saga’s famous architect Kingo Tatsuno, who designed Tokyo Station. “Takeo Onsen Romon” was a unique building in that it was built without using one nail, and as it was the symbol of Takeo Onsen, we stamped it atop the square wafers, which has slits to make it easier to eat. Inside, you will find an elegant paste of kidney beans and yuzu.
